EDEN sculpture REPRESENTS
Jilly Sutton
Figurative / Abstract:
Wood carving / Bronze
ABOUT
Jilly Sutton is a British sculptor working mainly in wood from her studio beside the River Dart in Devon. Her surroundings inform the serenity and stillness of her work, where raised grain adds a distinctive dimension to her carvings. Sutton is best known for her large-scale carved heads, predominantly figurative but often exploring abstraction.

ARTISTIC VISION
Jilly draws inspiration directly from the organic qualities of wood. Years spent living in Nigeria also broadened her practice, introducing influences from African carving traditions and textiles. She describes the warmth, grain, and embodied life of ancient trees as a constant source of wonder and inspiration, often imparting a sense of tranquillity to her sculpted forms.
Process / Technical Innovation
Her sculptures frequently involve bleaching, texturing, and polishing the timber surface to reveal tactile qualities and subtle tonal shifts. Collections of driftwood and the ancient trees around her Devon home have inspired her material choices and finishes. While she is best known for carved wood, her practice also extends into bronze and resin.
“Working with the vagaries of the organic nature of wood never ceases to be a challenge, but the warmth, grain and embodied life of ancient trees are a constant source of wonder and inspiration to me.”
RECOGNITION
Jilly’s work is represented in major UK collections and she has exhibited nationally for over three decades. She is represented by Wimbledon Fine Art and has works in both public and private collections, including the National Portrait Gallery.
